Justin Smith, CFA, CFP

Senior Financial Planner, Chief Investment Strategist

Knowing full well that financial planning is about far more than numbers, I love to help clients walk through both the routine and the significant decisions in life. While I could have been perfectly happy with a career as a mathematician or counselor; I’m delighted to get to be both…often within the same meeting or even sentence. I thrive on being able to transform complex financial and relational issues into practical plans and clear action steps.

Knowing full well that financial planning is about far more than numbers, I love to help clients walk through both the routine and the significant decisions in life. While I could have been perfectly happy with a career as a mathematician or counselor; I’m delighted to get to be both…often within the same meeting or even sentence. “Our happiest clients are not the ones with the most money. Rather, our happiest clients are those who live within their means and give their time and money away to things they’re passionate about.”

Not surprisingly, I grew up talking about stocks and compound interest over Frosted Flakes at the family breakfast table. I first came to Smith Partners (then Jonathan Smith & Co.) in the summer of 2001 as an intern and then permanently in 2005 after two years in Raleigh as a trust accountant.

I have been fortunate to learn not only through the CFA and CFP programs, but more importantly, from the three decades of fiduciary client relationships we’ve been entrusted with. I’m thankful that most days, it does not feel like a “family business” but rather a business made up of a team that feels like family.

When I’m away from work, I love to spend as much time as possible with my wife Millie and our three kids (daughters Grayson and Finley and son Everett). We love to create, invent, play and read. Millie and I also love to open their home to host bible studies, community groups, home concerts and outdoor movie nights. Most mornings I’m up by 5:00 am working out with an F3 group and most evenings the last thing I see is the glow from my Kindle as I read any number of books.
